Make Back to School a Breeze with These Tips

If you can believe it, Summer 2025 is already coming to an end. August's arrival means it's time to transition out of vacay mode and get focused. Some of us are sending young ones to kindergarten, while others are getting teens ready for high school (like me)! These transitions can be stressful, but they can be a breeze with a little planning. Here are our tips to get back into a routine:

Organization is Key

  • Create a calendar with important dates like the first day of school, parent-teacher nights, holiday breaks, and extracurricular sign-up dates. We use a shared calendar in my family so everyone stays in the loop!

  • Create a list of needed supplies and get your shopping done early.

  • Develop designated spots for important items like backpacks and lunches so they can be ready to go each morning!

Develop a Routine that Sets You Up for Success

  • Adjust bedtimes and wake-up times to align with the upcoming school schedule. I like to start this about two weeks ahead of time!

  • Develop a morning routine and practice it ahead of the first day so you know what to expect.

  • Similarly, develop an afternoon routine that includes a designated homework zone that minimizes distractions.

Get Familiar with Meal Prep

  • Create a list of quick and easy breakfasts for busy mornings.

  • Similarly, create a list of reliable go-to lunchbox items and prep ahead of time when possible. Make sure to include healthy snacks!

  • Meal plan for dinners weekly for smoother evenings.  I like to do this on Sundays and prep whatever I can!

Prep Minds & Emotions

  • Check in with your kids before the first day. Set a positive tone for the school year and talk through any nerves they have.

  • Help your kids set a couple personal goals for the start of the year.

  • Incorporate a few educational games or daily reading time to refresh academic skills. I push the reading big time in my household!

Stay Connected

  • See if your school has a parent Facebook group and join it! Facebook groups are one of my favorite ways to stay connected.

  • Create an easy-reference list of teacher emails and contact information.

  • Make time for daily check-ins with your kids.  Use this LINK for a list of questions other than "How was your day?".

We hope your family has an easy and fun start to the new school year! If part of your transition back to school is searching for a new home, Jennifer Vick & Co. can help you find your perfect fit in the Carolinas.
